Forums, and the anecdotal stories found within, can be a useful for people searching for answers to their questions. Finding people that have gone through, or are currently going through, the same problems as you can be critical to calming anxiety and emotions associated with bad life events. I’ve used them and it has certainly offered some peace to me at times.
At the same time I believe that these forums and posts need to be evaluated on a case by case basis. For instance, during my initial searches for TFCC tears I came across a different array of forums with a large wealth of opinions and stories. Unfortunately many of these stories were horror stories from people who had undergone complications following surgery, whether it was increased pain, limited ROM (range of motion), and poor prognosis. While these stories certainly need to be considered you cannot let them discourage you. The more I read the farther the mental hole I dug into myself which led to some exhausting anxiety.
Why did it seem only bad stories were getting posted? Can anyone fully recover? Are these people telling the whole prognosis? What did they do differently? Etc.
